Work begins on key flyovers despite funding doubts

OVERNIGHT engineering works began around two of Cork city’s busiest roundabouts last night as preparations continue for the construction of two flyovers.

However, there has been no commitment on funding from the National Roads Authority (NRA) yet for the construction of the flyovers on the Bandon and Sarsfield Road roundabouts.

Despite the absence of funding, engineers in Cork County Council are pressing ahead with all the advance works on the N25 south ring road.

Motorists have now been warned of short-term lane closures and minor disruption near the roundabouts every night until next Tuesday. The works will get under way at 10pm and should be completed by 6am.

The pavement assessment works will assess the condition of the road surface in the areas where the flyovers are due to be built.

Meanwhile, five sub-contractors short-listed for the flyover projects are finalising their tenders.

A spokesperson for the project said it is still hoped to award the contract before the end of this year.

Subject to the availability of funding, major road works on the sites could begin by the very end of this year or early next year.

It is hoped the work will take no more than two years.

A scale model of the two flyovers is available at City Hall for inspection by the public.

It is due to be moved to County Hall over the next few weeks.
