The former Ahern’s garage and petrol station, on the Tralee-Limerick road, has been cordoned off with a hoarding for some years, but is now to become a neighbourhood centre with shops and restaurants.
The planning appeals board has rejected an appeal by vet Thomas Brosnan, whose veterinary hospital adjoins the site and who claimed the proposal would result in a traffic hazard.
Paul and Pat Ahern have been given the all-clear to demolish existing buildings on the site and to build a complex with a 1,711 square metre floor area and three separate blocks, one with three storeys.
It will include convenience stores, two restaurants and a café, two apartments, offices and other facilities.
One of the conditions is that vehicles accessing the busy N22 road from the site will be allowed turn left only, so that traffic will not be crossing the main road.
