Boy dramatically improves after travelling for stem cell therapy

A NINE-year-old boy with a rare neurological disorder which renders him unable to speak has reportedly seen his condition dramatically improve following radical stem cell treatment in Dusseldorf in Germany.

Evan O’Dwyer from the Commons Road in Cork city was born with a neuronal migration disorder which means the left side of the brain didn’t develop, which in turn led to epilepsy and autism. He is also a coeliac and takes about 30 supplements a day.

Evan travelled to Germany earlier this month with his mother Deirdre, who has tirelessly fundraised to obtain the best possible care for her son. Evan underwent a complex procedure which saw bone marrow from his hip cultivated for stem cells. The neurosurgeon then drilled a small hole into Evan’s skull and inserted the stem cells.
