Boy dramatically improves after travelling for stem cell therapy
Evan O’Dwyer from the Commons Road in Cork city was born with a neuronal migration disorder which means the left side of the brain didn’t develop, which in turn led to epilepsy and autism. He is also a coeliac and takes about 30 supplements a day.
Evan travelled to Germany earlier this month with his mother Deirdre, who has tirelessly fundraised to obtain the best possible care for her son. Evan underwent a complex procedure which saw bone marrow from his hip cultivated for stem cells. The neurosurgeon then drilled a small hole into Evan’s skull and inserted the stem cells.
Ms O’Dwyer was concerned that her son would be very weak following the procedure. However, he has bounced back from his surgery and doctors are extremely pleased with his progress. Ms O’Dwyer says she is ecstatic at the outcome of the surgery.
“Evan is doing really well, he is walking, eating and is mad babbling. He is in brilliant form, smiling away. He is definitely a brave warrior and we are so proud of him. Thanks everyone for all your support and prayers.”
It is hoped Evan’s condition will improve radically in the coming weeks. He is due back in Cork this week following his stint in intensive care at the Excel Centre in Dusseldorf.
Evan spent the first two years of his life in and out of hospital with seizures. His parents Deirdre and Al have raised in the region of €38,000 for his medical bills. However, these will be ongoing and he will need treatment for years to come.
