Rugby star says thank you to honest teenager
He met 14-year-old Eoin O’Halloran, who found a medal lost by the second row forward at Thomond Park after Munster beat the Ospreys 36-10 to win last year’s Magners League title.
In the excitement after the game, the lock lost his medal as he was mobbed by delighted fans. On getting to the dressing room, he realised his medal was missing.
But Eoin spotted the precious medal nestling in the Thomond Park grass.
He took it to the nearby Mayorstone Garda Station. A Garda rugby fan soon realised what it was and contacted Munster management who informed him Mick O’Driscoll had lost his medal. Mick got it back shortly after.
And, before leaving Limerick on Saturday, he met with Eoin to thank him.
He said: “I don’t know how many people were on the pitch on that night, but I think in fairness to Eoin he was very good to hand it straight into Mayorstone Garda Station. I was very lucky, and I think I will be keeping hold of my medals from now on.”
As a gesture of gratitude he gave Eoin a signed Munster jersey and signed pictures of the team. He presented Munster bags to young people taking part in the Cois Céim project which Eoin attends.
Eoin said: “It felt good to find the medal and get it back to Mick and it was great meeting him. I try to go to as many Munster games as possible at Thomond Park.”
Cois Céim project manager, Elaine Slattery, said the fact that Mick O’Driscoll came to Moyross to acknowledge the honesty of a young person shows doing the honest thing has it’s rewards.
“You could see Eoin has been brought up in a family which has a very good, soundly based family values,” she said.
