Seven men killed in weekend road crashes
Timothy Lane, 21, from Coolnaleen, Listowel, died following a two-car collision near Newcastle West, Co Limerick, on Saturday morning. His only brother, Patrick, passed away last year in tragic circumstances and he is survived by his sisters Helen and Joan, and his parents, Paddy and Kay.
Mr Lane worked with the Kerry Group in Charleville, Co Cork, and was travelling home to study for accountancy exams. He was a graduate of IT Tralee and a former finalist in the Young Entrepreneur of the Year competition.
A second Kerryman in his 20s, Robert Twomey, was fatally injured in a two-car crash near Melbourne, Australia, on Saturday. The young carpenter from Ballahadigue, Listowel, was living in Australia for two years.
North Kerry TD Jimmy Deenihan said the community was devastated by the deaths and said their prayers were with the two grieving families.
The crash in the southern Australia state of Victoria also claimed the life of Adrian Freeman, 24, from Tooreen, Co Mayo, and left two other young Irish men with minor injuries. It is understood they were travelling from work to a match when a car driven by a woman in her 60s crossed over to the wrong side of the road.
A qualified engineer, Mr Freeman is survived by his parents, a brother and a sister. He played hurling for Mayo and his local club, Tooreen. He left for Australia last October and intended to be back by August to assist his club in the county championship.
Jackie Coyne, spokes- man for Tooreen hurling club, said he was highly thought of by everyone he played with and against.
“Adrian wasn’t just a great sportsman. He was a wonderful son. His family were justifiably proud of him,” Mr Coyne said.
In Co Sligo, a motorist died when his car crashed over a 60-foot cliff at Mullaghmore.
The 32-year-old building worker from Omagh, Co Tyrone, was reported missing yesterday morning.
It is understood his car may have gone over the cliff around eight hours before being spotted at low tide at around 4.15pm.
In Cork, Gardaí at Bandon are seeking witnesses to an accident that claimed the life of a 24-year-old man in the early hours of yesterday morning.
He was not named last night but it is understood Gardaí intended to notify relatives overseas before releasing his details.
The accident occurred at around 2.20am when the car left the road at Ballinhassig between Bandon and Halfway village. The young man was pronounced dead at the scene and a male passenger in his 30s was taken to Cork Universality Hospital with serious injuries.
A 23-year-old man died on Saturday night when the car he was driving was involved in a single vehicle collision in the Ballyedmond area near Gorey, Co Wexford.
A man killed in a two-vehicle crash between Carbury and Edenderry, Co Kildare, at 6.45am on Saturday was named as Mohammed Saidu, 45, from Leixlip, Co Kildare.
