Politicians pay tribute
“Gerry was a household name and a broadcaster of immense talent and popularity,” Mr Cowen said.
Mr Cowen said that, as a broadcaster, Mr Ryan had been “both informed and intelligent, forthright and articulate”.
He added: “As a man, he was generous, famously irreverent and witty... He was always engaging company and a man of considerable charm... He will be hugely missed by all those who had the good fortune to know him. I want to extend my sympathies to Gerry’s family and friends at this difficult time,” Mr Cowen added.
Green Party leader John Gormley said Mr Ryan’s ability to handle “both the serious and light-hearted stories was second to none”. “His good humour concealed a keen intellect and a commitment to straight journalism – he was a fair and accurate commentator. His death is a tragic loss for the viewers and listeners of Ireland,” Mr Gormley added.
Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny said: “Gerry brought a great spirit to his coverage on radio and television and engendered huge loyalty in the legion of fans dedicated to him.”
Labour’s Liz McManus said Mr Ryan “had a genuine talent” for connecting with his audience.
