Head shop owners unite ‘to protect industry’
The alternative lifestyle shops have been under much scrutiny lately as they sell legal synthetic drugs which have been causing harm to young people.
And, although there is a voluntary code in place whereby the shops should not sell to under eighteens, it is not being upheld in many places.
Helen Stone, who owns four shops in Cork and Kerry, said it was time for responsible people in the industry to take action.
Ms Stone said many in the industry would welcome regulation.
In a notice sent to head shop owners around the country, Ms Stone said unity would show the public and the authorities that head shop owners are responsible, legal traders who are prepared to address the issues that are causing concern – the sale of banned substances, sales to underage customers, lack of information regarding the effects of our products.
“Individually, we all face challenges in our industry at present – from sensationalist news articles, Garda raids and customs seizures, as well as public protests.
“United, we are a much stronger force to combat these challenges,” the document stated, adding an open meeting would be arranged where all concerned alternative traders could meet to discuss the formation of an association.
It is envisaged membership of the association would include:
* A network of communication between alternative traders, countrywide.
* Liaison with Government bodies regarding issues affecting the industry.
* A voluntary code of conduct to which members would adhere.
* Assistance of other association members in the event of goods being detained by Customs/gardaí (to help to restock quickly to avoid loss of business).
