Examiner man Jim Leddin dies

Mr Leddin who worked for the then Cork Examiner for over 40 years, was father of former Labour mayor of Limerick, Cllr Joe Leddin and brother of former mayors, Frank and Tim Leddin.

He was born in 1929, the year his uncle Michael Keyes became mayor of Limerick. Mr Keyes went on to serve as minister for post and telegraphs and minister for local government in inter-party governments.

The late Mr Leddin worked with the late Ms Tess Brazil in the Limerick office of the Examiner which was then located in Catherine Street.

His son Joe Leddin said: “Dad loved working for the Examiner and was up every morning at 4.30 to collect the papers from the Cork train. He ensured every newsagent in the city had the paper every day and the Echo every evening. When I went to see him in the hospital on Saturday he was sitting up reading the sports section of the Examiner and the preview of the Garryowen-Cons game that afternoon. He was a great Garryowen man.”

The late Mr Leddin was also widely known by the greyhound fraternity as he ran a kiosk at the Markets Field on race nights.

Another one of his sons, Declan is a Labour councillor on Edenderry town council.

The removal took place from Thompson’s funeral home, Thomas Street last evening to St Joseph’s church.

The funeral will take place today after 11.30am Mass to Mount St Oliver cemetery.
