Ennis rail line reopens after flooding

However, the company and the Office of Public Works (OPW) remain at odds over who is responsible for resolving the flooding issues.

The Ennis-Limerick was closed at the end of November for safety reasons following flooding of the line at Ballycar near Newmarket-on-Fergus which is in an area of slow-draining karst land formation. Bus transfers have operated in place of the train service since. Rail services resumed last Thursday afternoon and the company has confirmed that a full service is operating. It is still feared, however, that unless the OPW undertakes urgent drainage works in the area flooding will recur and the future of the Western Rail Corridor will be placed in jeopardy.
