No cuts in Ferrero Rochers supplies as embassies staff keep €8m expenses

THE ambassador’s receptions are noted in society for their host’s exquisite taste. And Irish embassies around the world will not have to cut back on the Ferrero Rochers as their allowance and expenses bill, amounting to €8 million a year, escapes public sector cutbacks.

The secretary general of the Department of Foreign Affairs, David Cooney, rejected calls for a voluntary surrender of part of allowances by diplomatic staff in 75 overseas missions, similar to a voluntary pay cut arrangement for the country’s judges.

“Frankly, you have to show a bit of form,” said Mr Cooney, explaining the importance of good clothes and parties in diplomacy.
