GARDAÍ in Listowel, Co Kerry, were last night investigating the bizarre circumstances surrounding the discovery of a man’s body at a waste sorting site near the town.

A Garda spokesman said they were keeping an open mind on the gruesome discovery, made around 4pm by workers at the site which is about 5km outside Listowel.

It is understood a truck had been collecting waste in Listowel and the north Kerry area for much of yesterday and the discovery was made after the material was brought to the South-West recycling compound at Kilmorna to be separated. It is thought the body of the man, in his 30s, was in a bin.

He has not yet been identified but is thought to be Irish and possibly from the south-east.

The body was last night still at the scene and gardaí have notified the state pathologist’s office of the discovery.

The remains are expected to be moved to Kerry General Hospital in Tralee today for a post mortem examination.

Garda sources last night said it was still unclear how the man had met his death, although they were treating the death as suspicious.

The direction the investigation will take will depend on the results of the post mortem.

Gardaí declined to comment on local speculation that a line of inquiry being pursued is that the man may have died as a result of a beating, or that the body may have been tipped into the truck from one of the wheelie bins in the area.

The Kerry scenes of crime investigation team was called out and has begun its forensic examination of the area.

Listowel is enjoying its busiest week of the year, with the town’s annual race meeting and harvest festival under way.

It is possible the man may have been visiting Listowel for the festivities.
