Mystery on identity of stabbed woman

MYSTERY continues to surround the identity of a woman found stabbed to death on Wednesday afternoon in Dublin’s Phoenix Park.

Mystery on identity of stabbed woman

She was stabbed more than five times to the chest and neck with a knife. No weapon has yet been found.

Gardaí are hoping a detailed description they have released about the woman may help their investigation.

She was found lying in a wooded area on the edge of the popular ‘15 Acre’ sports grounds, near the Chapelizod exit, at around 3.30pm on Wednesday.

Gardaí said she was fully clothed and there were very few personal items on her.

They issued a detailed description of her and her clothing:

n4’10” in height, medium build with brown hair, described as not quite shoulder length.

* She wore a green or grey zip-up fleece over a striped red and blue rugby-type top.

* She wore three-quarter length loose fitting pink-type leggings.

* A pair of thick woolly socks were found nearby and her toes had gold nail varnish.

* She wore a gold chain necklace, with a St Anthony-type medal tied with a piece of string,

* She also wore a silver cross chain-type necklace and gold hoop earnings, small and ‘creole’ style.

Gardaí said a white scarf and black zip-up top, believed to be hers, were also found at the scene as well as a dark blanket.

Garda spokesman Superintendent John Gilligan said they did not know whether or not the woman was homeless or sleeping rough.

He said the area was not, as far as gardaí knew, an area frequented by homeless people.

He said a lady’s black bike was found nearby, but added they did not yet know for sure if it belonged to the woman.

“The most important thing to advance the investigation is to identify the victim,” said Supt Gilligan.

He said the area was popular with joggers, walkers and cyclists, and he appealed to anyone who was in the area in recent days, or who saw anything suspicious, to come forward.

He also asked the two passerbys who originally found the woman to contact gardaí.

He said the woman’s description and jewellery may jog recognition in someone.

He pointed out that the woman’s gold chain may have been broken at some stage and that she might have repaired it with a piece of string.

“It might strike a note with somebody who knows the victim,” said Supt Gilligan. He said gardaí may release a photograph of the woman if they fail to make progress in her identification.

A full postmortem examination was conducted last night.

It’s believed she may have been stabbed at the scene on Tuesday night.

It is not clear if she is a foreign national or not.
