Efforts continue to save pilot whales

AN all-out effort to save ten pilot whales in danger of stranding in the Dingle Peninsula was continuing last evening.

Efforts continue to save pilot whales

Members of the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG), cliff and coast rescue services, Fenit lifeboat, local boats, local people and holidaymakers were all involved in attempts to coax, or push, the whales out to sea. They managed to get the whales out to deeper water on Wednesday evening, but the pod came back close to shore, near Derrymore, in Tralee Bay, yesterday.

According to Department of Marine official Kevin Flannery a mature bull, which may be sick or injured, is leading the pod ashore and putting all the animals at risk of death.
