It is understood he had been taken into custody in relation to the alleged withholding of information.

A file is being prepared for the DPP.

The body of murder victim Stephen Lyne, 17, was found on the grass verge at Ross Road, Killarney, at 1.43am, on June 18.

A postmortem found he had died from a stab wound to the back.

Supt Michael Maher, Killarney, who is heading the investigation, said there had been an “unparalleled response” from the public to appeals for assistance.

He said steady progress was being made by the investigating team and appealed to anyone with information about the crime, which has shocked Killarney, to come forward in confidence.

The fourth-year student at Killarney Community College had been out with friends earlier in the night and was attacked as he made his way home some time after 1am on June 18.

His body was found about 300m from his home at Castle Falls Estate.

Investigating gardaí have since conducted scores of interviews and a number of items found at, or near, the scene are being forensically examined.

The items are understood to include a blade, the victim’s mobile phone and cigarette butts.

In the past week, many young people and friends of the deceased, some of them in tears, have visited the scene and placed bunches of flowers there.
