Man slashed with blade may need hand surgery
Mick Wisdom, 45, was at home in Lucan, west Dublin, with his wife, Elaine, on Tuesday morning getting their children ready for school when there was a knock on their door.
When Ms Wisdom, 44, answered, a man tried to force his way into the hallway. She stopped the man and cried out to her husband who confronted the burglar, who was armed with a Stanley blade.
Mr Wisdom was slashed in his right arm, as well as his chest and right hand.
A number of neighbours came to his aid and tackled the burglar when Ms Wisdom called for help.
“He got 14 stitches to his chest, 40 stitches to his arm and stitches to his hand,” said Shane Carroll, Ms Wisdom’s brother, yesterday.
He said the damage to Mr Wisdom’s tendon in his hand was of most concern, given his occupation as an electrician.
Mr Carroll said his brother-in-law was transferred yesterday morning from Blanchardstown Hospital to Beaumont Hospital.
“He walked out of the hospital this morning and was in good spirits,” said Mr Carroll.
He said what happened was hitting his sister. “It was kind of sinking in last night.”
He said their two daughters, Ellie, six, and Katie, eight, were upset on Tuesday night, but were fine yesterday.
“They were out playing in the park this morning”.
He said some people were speculating that the Wisdoms would move out of their house. But he said his sister’s attitude was, were it not for their good neighbours, things could have turned out worse.
