They are supplying detectives in Amsterdam with intelligence on the background of Ennis as well as any information on possible suspects.

However, some gardaí suspect he may have been killed by local criminals in Amsterdam.

The dismembered remains of the 29-year-old were found in a remote stretch of a canal in the northern part of the city on February 24.

The remains were identified after fingerprint details of the victim were circulated through Interpol to police across Europe. Gardaí came back with a positive match.

Ennis fled Dublin soon after he was charged inOctober 2007 on drugs and firearms offences. Gang bosses suspect he provided information to gardaí about a cocaine factory which was raided after they arrested him.

A detective sergeant based in the Irish embassy in the Hague has been assisting Amsterdam police.

Garda sources said he is conducting inquiries into Ennis’s background and gathering other intelligence.

“He’s providing information on who the guy was, his links to organised crime, who his mates were and who his enemies were,” said a garda source.

The detective sergeant is in contact with various garda units and divisions here to glean information.
