FOR the first time in its 30-year history, the Medical Council will today allow public attendance at a fitness to practise (FTP) inquiry.

The opening of its doors to anyone other than those directly involved in an inquiry has been made possible by the Medical Practitioners Act 2007, which replaces 1978 legislation.

The change comes after years of lobbying by patient advocacy groups, which have repeatedly criticised what they perceive as a lack of transparency in the way the council operates.
