Geoghegan murder: Two released

TWO men arrested in Limerick and Dublin in connection with the murder of rugby team captain Shane Geoghegan were released without charge.

A man in his 50s was arrested in the north side of Limerick early on Thursday morning and at around the same time detectives in Dublin arrested a man in his 20s when they raided a house in Clondalkin.

After being held under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act both were released without charge late on Thursday night.

The two main suspects in the investigation left the country shortly after the murder of Shane Geoghegan, who was shot dead near his home at Kilteragh, Dooradoyle on November 9 last.

Shane Geoghegan, 28, who captained the Garryowen thirds team, was returning home after watching a rugby game on TV at a friend’s house nearby.

Gardaí believe he was mistaken for a known drugs importer.

The drug importer’s partner was approved by Limerick County Council for affordable housing which enabled her to buy the house at €51,000 below the going price at the time.

Members of the McCarthy-Dundon gang tried to shoot the drug importer the previous year in Kilteragh when up to 20 shots were fired at him.

The two arrests are the first in the investigation.

Speaking at a Garda graduation in Templemore on Thursday, Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy said he believed those involved in the murder will be brought to justice.

He said: “Like the Veronica Guerin investigation, it’s slow, tedious but dogged investigation and I am confident of a result.”

Meanwhile two teenagers have been released after they were questioned in connection with the death of Limerick man Mike Molloy.

Mr Molloy, 39, was injured at his home in Garryglass Avenue, Ballinacurra Weston on Friday night of last week.

On becoming unwell on Saturday he was taken to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital and died a short time later.

Two youths were questioned about an incident in Garryglass Avenue on Friday night and released.

A file is being prepared for the DPP.
