Murder accused in court
Joseph Cummins, aged 21, originally from the city who later moved to The Willows, Cairnwood in Tramore with his parents, died after an incident in a single-storey rented property in Lower Grange on November 24 last.
Mr Cummins died shortly after he was stabbed a number of times during an incident at Lower Grange. Robert Devine, of Wheatfields in Clonmel, appeared at Waterford District Court yesterday charged with his murder. Inspector John Mulligan asked Judge William Earley to adjourn the proceedings for two weeks to facilitate the preparation and service of the book of evidence.
Solicitor Kenneth Cunningham asked that pressure be applied to the office of the DPP in relation to the matter, as the charge was “the most serious charge that can be brought against a person” in the State.
Devine, who required medical attention in prison, wanted to “go to Limerick” because of certain difficulties at the Cork prison, the court heard.
Judge Earley said he was “sure that the prison authorities consider all circumstances” and would place the accused “where he is safest”.
Devine was remanded in custody to appear at the court again on February 10.
