THE political world expressed its sadness last night following the death of former government minister Dr Conor Cruise O’Brien.

Party leaders pay tribute to Conor Cruise O’Brien

Taoiseach Brian Cowen led the tributes, praising the “sizeable impact” which Dr Cruise O’Brien had made in the public service, politics, academia and journalism.

Mr Cowen said Dr Cruise O’Brien, who celebrated his 91st birthday last month, was a man of “strong intellect [and] strong convictions”, who held views “not always in accordance” with his own party, Fianna Fáil.

“But I never doubted his sincerity or his commitment to a better and more peaceful Ireland,” he added.

Mr Cowen recalled how Dr Cruise O’Brien, born on November 3, 1917, first came to prominence as a respected civil servant, serving in the Department of Foreign Affairs and the UN.

“As a journalist, Conor was prolific... His articles were always challenging and passionate, which is a measure of the man he was.

“I want to extend my deep sympathies to his family and friends.”

Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny said Dr Cruise O’Brien had a “towering intellect” and was a fearless defender of his principles.

“He was a provocative and committed politician who loved the cut and thrust of weighty policy debate as much as he enjoyed the stories of ordinary people.

“I offer my sincere condolences to Conor’s extended family on this very sad day.”

Labour leader Eamon Gilmore also offered his condolences, saying Ireland had lost an “intellectual giant and one of the most remarkable Irish public figures of the 20th century”.

“Conor was never afraid to take up unpopular positions with the result that few ever agreed with him all the time... but even those who disagreed with him always respected his intellect and his integrity.”
