Guilty plea for part played in hijacking of two cars

Jennifer O’Mahony, of Upper Friary Street, Cashel, Co Tipperary, was due to stand trial at Cork Circuit Criminal Court yesterday.

When she was arraigned on six counts on the indictment she pleaded guilty to all charges.

O’Mahony, who is in her 20s, pleaded guilty to charges of falsely imprisoning two female motorists in their cars in Carrigtowhill on November 13, 2007. She also admitted forcing one of the women to drive the car under her (O’Mahony’s) direction.

Details of the violent incidents were given in court a fortnight ago when a male co-accused, Gerard Browne, 26, from Upper Friary Street, Cashel, pleaded guilty to 11 separate counts on the indictment against him.

Judge Con Murphy jailed Browne for four years.

After O’Mahony pleaded guilty to her part in the crime, barrister Kieran Hughes asked for sentencing to be adjourned until February 18, 2009. A probation report is to be prepared on the defendant.

Judge Patrick J Moran remanded O’Mahony on continuing bail for sentencing.

During the sentencing hearing for Browne last month, Garda Liam O’Leary described how Browne hijacked two cars.

He stole a knife from a local Centra shop and then sat into the front passenger seat of Christine O’Jogbede’s car. Browne said to her: “Don’t move, don’t scream, I have a knife.” He was joined by a woman. Ms O’Jogbede panicked and screamed. Then he put the knife to her throat and said, “Stop screaming or I will cut your throat.” After a struggle the victim got out of the car with the keys and sought refuge in a Chinese takeaway.

Browne left the car and did more or less the same thing to a 17-year-old motorist, Noelle Garde, who was sitting alone in her car at Main Street, Carrigtowhill, that day. The only reason Browne was in Carrigtwohill was that he got the wrong bus and had been trying to get home to Cashel. He was detoxifying from heroin abuse at the time.
