Victim of alleged assault dies of brain haemorrhage
Gardaí believe Denis Nolan, who was single, was attacked by a group of young men at Main Street in Glanworth in the early hours of the morning of the October 27 bank holiday. It is thought he was struck a number of times by the men, including blows while he was on the ground.
Despite his injuries, Mr Nolan was able to get himself home after the incident.
On the following day, through his work as a lorry driver, he travelled to Clonmel.
However, while there he started to feel unwell and sought help.
He was initially taken to the local hospital where it was discovered he had a brain haemorrhage.
He was then transferred to Cork University Hospital.
HIs condition was so serious he had to be put on a life-support machine where he remained until the machine was switched off yesterday.
While gardaí have not linked his death to the attack, they are still investigating the assault and they have appealed for anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious in Glanworth village between 11.30pm on October 26 and 1.30am on October 27 to contact them at Fermoy Garda Station or on the Garda confidential line on 1800-666-111.
The Garda investigation team have carried out house-to-house inquiries in the area and will continue to do so in the following days.
It is believed they have spoken to a number of people and are also looking at CCTV footage taken from the general area.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident gardaí are continuing to investigate the murder of another north Cork man, John McManus from Fermoy, whose body was found in undergrowth near Ballyduff in Kerry last Thursday.
Mr McManus is believed to have suffered extensive head injuries and an attempt was made to bury his body.
Over the weekend a man was questioned about his death after a routine Garda patrol in the area stopped a car and found blood stains and a shovel in the boot.
