Latest security van attack sparks concerns

SECURITY staff representatives yesterday expressed fears that a cash-in-transit worker could be killed if the recent upsurge in raids continued.

Latest security van attack sparks concerns

The warning came after a cash-in-transit van was held up by an armed gang, during which a staff member was assaulted.

A number of shots were fired, but nobody was injured. The incident took place on the Swords Road in north Dublin yesterday morning.

It is understood the cash taken amounted to less than €20,000.

This is thought to be the sixth such attack since July, a marked rise on the earlier part of the year.

“We condemn this attack, which again has involved the use of firearms,” said Kevin McMahon of Siptu’s security branch, which represents workers in the industry.

“Obviously, we’re very concerned with the frequency of these attacks by criminal gangs and the injuries being sustained by our members, be it physical or psychological. It’s a very, very upsetting experience to be confronted by an armed gang and have firearms pointed at you.

“The gangs are ruthless and have made it quite clear that if they don’t get cooperation it’s not just a case of threatening people, they will actually injure people.”

Mr McMahon added: “Fortunately, so far, no one has been killed in these robberies. If they continue to go on with the frequency they are going on somebody could be killed.”
