Epileptic seizure may have caused man’s fatal fall

Patrick Hourigan was the son of the Fine Gael leader on Limerick City Council.

He collapsed on Friday at about 7.30pm shortly after leaving the family home at North Circular Road for a walk on his own.

He was discovered lying on a pavement and indications are he may have received a head injury in a fall.

A passer-by called the emergency services but efforts to revive him at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital did not succeed.

His father, Councillor Michael Hourigan was Mayor of Limerick in 2004/05.

Patrick is also survived by his mother, Pat, four sisters, who include his twin, Kate and two brothers.

The funeral Mass is at 11am today at Our Lady of the Rosary Church, Ennis Road.

The family have asked that any donations should be made at Griffin’s funeral home to the epilepsy association, Brainwave.

Fine Gael colleague on the city council, Cllr Kevin Kiely said: “On behalf of his colleagues on the city council and the party, I would like to offer our condolences to Michael and his wife, Pat and all their family at this difficult time.”

A spokesperson for the epilepsy association in Limerick have also offered their condolences to the Hourigan family on the tragic loss of Patrick.

She said: “We would offer our condolences to the Hourigan family and we are very appreciative that they would ask people to make a donation to Brainwave.”
