Four in custody after car chase
Eye witnesses said a 2008 Lexus car rammed a 1998 Opel Vectra up to ten times on John Street at about 9.30pm on Saturday.
The chase, which continued on foot along Waterford’s main thoroughfare and taxi rank on weekend nights, occurred as hundreds made their way to-and-from nearby pubs and restaurants.
According to witnesses, one or two men burst past the bouncers at a local pub, while others came along and “threw a gun into the smoking area on the street” to the front of the bar.
Gardaí last night confirmed four men were arrested on John Street and a firearm was recovered in a search of a nearby premises.
“Two are being held in Dungarvan for questioning and two in are being held in Tramore,” a garda spokesman said.
Local sources said the incident was a revenge attack for the shooting of 14-year-old Jason Stokes outside his home in broad daylight on Thursday, while he was helping his mother.
Meanwhile, an investigation has been launched after a fatal road accident involving a collision with a Garda car in Meath.
The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission began the inquiry after a 21-year-old motorcyclist died when his bike hit the marked patrol car outside Kells on Saturday evening.
The crash occurred at 6pm and the man died shortly afterwards in Navan General Hospital.
Weather conditions on the road at the time of the crash had been described as bad.
