4 arrests in €1m cannabis seizure

Four men were arrested after the drugs were discovered when two vans and a truck were stopped and searched in Swords, north Dublin.

The joint operation was a result of intelligence supplied to customs and Garda officers.

It is believed the drugs were being transferred near Dublin airport when arrests took place. Gardaí believe the drugs were brought to Ireland by a British gang, according to reports.

More than 95kg of cannabis resin with a street value of €1m were seized in Swords, customs said.

The four men arrested were aged between 30 and 50, with Irish addresses, and were last night being held under section 2 of the Drug Trafficking Act at Santry, Whitehall and Ballymun Garda stations.

Customs said one of the trucks had earlier arrived into Dublin Port by car-ferry from Britain.

A truck from the group of vehicles then stopped on Forest Little Road, near Dublin Airport at about 6.30am.

Gardaí, including officers from the National Drugs Unit, then moved in while the drugs were being transferred to a van.

It is thought the drug bust was part of an international operation by investigators into both British and Irish drug traffickers.
