Lifeboat to honour volunteer couple

AN RNLI decision to provide a new inshore lifeboat in Fenit is expected to create closer links between the Co Kerry port and Bangor, Co Down.

The €25,000 craft is to be dedicated to the memory of Bradley and Sonya Burns, who had worked as mechanic and administration officer, respectively, on Bangor lifeboat.

The couple died within 10 months of each other, in 2006.

They were in their early thirties and left two children, Rory, 11, and Charlie, 2.

An appeal has been launched in Bangor to raise the money for a new IBI inshore lifeboat, with money also expected to be raised in Kerry.

“Funding a new lifeboat is a fitting honour to two people who gave so much to the RNLI and it will be a lasting legacy to their two young children who, I hope, will be regular visitors to Fenit,” said Kyle Marshall, senior helm, Bangor lifeboat.
