Tributes pour in for Stanley Roche
Mr Roche, who spearheaded the growth of the Roches Stores empire had undergone surgery in recent weeks and was recovering at home. But he died in the Bon Secours Hospital in Cork on Monday.
The super-rich businessman was chairman of the family firm, estimated to be worth close to €1 billion in 2006. But he kept a low profile, displayed none of the trappings of wealth and was rarely photographed or quoted. He was described by associates as a very tough and uncompromising businessman.
“But underneath that, he was quiet, shy and unassuming in private and fiercely protective of his family life,” said Roger Flack, a former president of Cork Chamber.
“He knew what he wanted and was very focused on getting it.” Mr Flack recalled how after some business lunches Mr Roche would decline offers of a drink saying: “I must get back to the shop.”
“It was as if he was talking about a corner shop in Ballyphehane. He wanted to ensure his store was the best in Cork. He was happiest talking about the business,” auctioneer Mr Flack said.
He first met Mr Roche in 1976 and acted as an agent for him in several strategic property acquisitions. Mr Roche snapped up about four acres of real estate around Maylor Street and Merchants Quay that allowed him expand the chain’s flagship St Patrick’s Street store and build a multi-storey car park.
“He wasn’t interested in property development,” said Mr Flack.
Former employees also paid tribute to Mr Roche describing his family firm as great employers who were known for keeping in touch with retirees. They also admired Mr Roche’s work ethic and spoke of how he would often be seen working on the shop floors.
Fine Gael Senator Jerry Buttimer, who lives close to the chain’s former Wilton store, also paid tribute.
“Mr Roche brought great employment to the Cork region. The business was widely regarded as one of the great companies to work for,” he said. “They had great regard for their staff and that attitude came from the top.” The Roche family also donated generously, but privately, to charity. Among their favourite charities was the Guardwell Sheltered Housing Project for the elderly in Kinsale, and the local community hospital.
Mr Roche is survived by his wife, Heide and their children, Nicholas, Peter, Morgan and Ondine. His remains will lie in repose at the Wilton Funeral Home off Sarsfield Road today before a private cremation ceremony. The family has asked that donations, in lieu of flowers, be given to the Kinsale Day Care Centre, another favoured charity.
