Knightly feast planned for King John’s Castle as Camelot is re-created

The event is being hosted by Shannon Heritage, the Shannon Development company tourism subsidiary, and staged by Chapter House Theatre Company.

The Theatre Company will use the Castle as the perfect setting to perform King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table — a new production from a script especially commissioned to bring to life the world famous stories of Camelot, Arthur and Merlin.

John Ruddle of Shannon Heritage said: “We are delighted to be bringing this event to Limerick. The aim of the event is to create magical theatre in magical surrounds, and what better setting than King John’s Castle. The castle’s large open courtyard provides the ideal location for theatrical, musical and incentive events. As open-air theatre lends itself perfectly to pre-show picnics, we would encourage visitors get into the festive mood by bringing picnic baskets to create a memorable and magical experience.”

The event will be performed and staged in the courtyard at King John’s Castle, with a large cast, traditional costume and an original music score performed by members of the company — Chapterhouse Theatre Company.

Over the years, Chapterhouse has built a reputation for presenting splendid theatre productions in the gardens and surrounds of some of the most magnificent castles, heritage sites and country houses across Ireland and the UK.

Richard Main of Chapterhouse Theatre Company said: “We pride ourselves on producing accessible, traditional but innovative shows that have entertained thousands of theatregoers.

“King Arthur is a new work written by Laura Turner, her take on Arthur is steeped in affection for the original tales, full of the romance and the chivalry of the period. This is matched with a modern wit, music and much swordplay. I am so pleased to be able to bring this excellent production to our friends in Ireland.”

The audience gets to join a company of travelling players as they tell the heroic deeds of perhaps the greatest King of any time or place.

From humble beginnings as a servant, to the drawing of the sword from the stone, through to the creation of Camelot — the audience will join Arthur on his journey as his tale unfolds with sword, sorcery and song.

The production is suited for families and children of all ages and will be a vivacious re-telling of some of the great tales of heroics, set in the perfect surroundings of King John’s Castle.
