He also defended his decision to issue a statement on Saturday amid Mr Ahern’s departure for a government trade mission to South Africa. Earlier, ministers criticised the timing of the attack insisting it ran against respected protocol to attack a Taoiseach on domestic issues when he is abroad on government business.
