Man charged with shears murder

Thomas Connors appeared before Dublin District Court charged with the murder of 30-year-old Michael Hughes in Harold’s Cross on Saturday.

Judge Hugh O’Donnell remanded him in custody to appear before Cloverhill District Court today.

Legal aid was granted for the defendant.

The court heard 24-year-old Connors, of Manor Court, Harold’s Cross, will undergo a psychiatric assessment at Cloverhill Prison regarding his fitness to plea.

His alleged victim, from Banagher, Co Offaly, was found dead in the hallway of Manor Villa flat complex on Saturday morning after suffering multiple stab wounds.

Mr Hughes was in Dublin for a friend’s engagement party and was returning to his cousin’s apartment at the time of the attack.

It is believed he was stabbed repeatedly with garden shears.

Connors was initially arrested near the scene but on Sunday was transferred to St James’s Hospital, Dublin, where he was held under armed guard. Gardaí confirmed he had not suffered any physical injury.

The suspect was released from hospital last night and taken to Terenure Garda Station.

Detective Inspector Gearóid Begley told the court Connors said “no reply” when charged with murder.

The defendant’s solicitor, Maura Kiely requested medical treatment for her client in prison and a psychiatric assessment.

Connors, who stood in silence during the short hearing, wore a black tracksuit and white runners with the shoelaces taken out.

Meanwhile, a man was remanded in custody yesterday over the killing of a man in a stabbing incident in Dublin.
