However, even Customs officials at Shannon Airport were taken aback recently when they opened a suitcase and found 45 new iPhone mobile phones worth about €10,000 inside.

The suitcase’s owner — who got a surprise bill estimated at €3,460 for VAT and duty afterwards — was one of 3,501 passengers stopped at Shannon and Dublin since October 3.
