Coroner raises road concerns
Cork city coroner Dr Myra Cullinane said she will bring to the attention of Kerry County Council the circumstances surrounding the death of Gerald Corcoran, 77, from Knockaderry, Farranfore, who died five days after a collision at the junction in the heart of Farranfore village on St Patrick’s Day.
Cork Coroner’s Court was told that the non-fatal injuries he sustained in the accident triggered a series of underlying health conditions which ultimately led to his death.
The jury returned a verdict of accidental death.
Dr Cullinane was told that several accidents, although none fatal, have occurred at this junction in recent years.
Local Garda Adrian Brennan said many involve tourists travelling to and from the airport.
Gda O’Brien said concerns about the junction have been raised with Kerry County Council and the National Roads Authority in the past and several warning signs have been erected on all approach roads.
Traffic lights at the junction have been ruled out, he said, but a flat roundabout could be considered.
