Gardaí quiz man over fatal stabbing

Finbarr Dennehy, aged 50, was found dead in suspicious circumstances in his apartment in Clontarf last Wednesday.

A post mortem found that the former executive with chocolate company Cadbury’s died from a single stab wound.

The victim had been found with his hands tied behind this back and his head covered in a sheet. A rope was also said to have been found with the body.

Detectives are investigating whether these items were linked to the death or arranged by the killer to indicate that the victim had accidentally killed himself.

Officers involved in the case arrested a 41-year-old man on Saturday night at a guesthouse in Dublin city centre.

He was taken to Clontarf Garda Station and detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, which allows for an initial period of 12 hours’ detention, which can be extended for a further 12 hours on direction of a senior garda.

The detention period is paused if the suspect wishes to sleep overnight.

The suspect in this case was arrested shortly after 8pm. He had to be released or charged by 8pm last night, unless he opted to rest overnight.

Gardaí said Mr Dennehy was last seen alive on Saturday night or Sunday morning, and may have been dead for a few days before his body was discovered.

They have appealed for anyone who may have had contact with him after that to come forward.
