Community cornerstone closes
The Congregation of the Good Shepherd Sisters confirmed yesterday that following months of consideration about the operation of their short-term respite and convalescent care facility at Clifton Home in Montenotte, a decision has been taken to close the 30-bed facility.
It has 36 staff, some on a part-time basis, and talks with them are underway.
While plans for the future of the facility have not been worked out, it could be sold and the proceeds reinvested in the Congregation’s other activities.
A spokesman said the Congregation has, in common with other religious organisations, been faced with an ageing population and reducing numbers.
The Health Service Executive (HSE) said that demand for the service has reduced in recent years due to the enhancement of services in the community aimed at supporting people in their own home.
The HSE is working with the Congregation to ensure that alternative arrangements are put in place for individuals who may be in need of this service into the future, the spokesman said.
The Sisters confirmed that they will continue to run their own services in Cork, which includes residential, training and family support services for homeless women, teenagers and children.
