City throws free party to thank litter-free parish

LIMERICK is to salute a city community for the manner it has tackled litter.

Litter pick-ups in Our Lady Queen of Peace parish left the neighbourhood squeaky clean.

Community co-ordinators appointed to fight anti-social behaviour came up with the idea.

The Mayor of Limerick, Cllr Ger Fahy, said that as a thank you, the council is organising a free family day of fun and entertainment next Saturday.

Mayor Fahy said: “The community co-ordinators did fantastic work on building up awareness of environment protection in this Parish and I would encourage everyone to come along next Saturday and enjoy all the free activities for kids and adults.”

Announcing details of the Our Lady Queen of Peace Community Festival, the Mayor said children are being asked to turn out in Limerick colours on the eve of the All-Ireland final.

Community co-ordinator Jenny Stone said they were delighted with the co-operation the people of the Parish gave them.

She said: “There was a brilliant response from everyone — especially the kids — and we wanted to organise something to reward them. We came up with this idea because there has not been a family fun day out in the parish for a long time.”

The Our Lady Queen of Peace Community Festival will be held at the Old Christians Club in Rathbane from 2pm — 6pm. The festival will start with Mass at 12 noon in Our Lady Queen of Peace Church. Then theex-servicemen’s band will lead the families from the church to the pitch.

Medals will be awarded to all families and refreshments will be provided.
