‘We want the truth over 1972 bombings’
The call from the group, Justice for the Forgotten, came at the unveiling of a memorial to the two teenagers killed in the UVF atrocity in Belturbet, in Co Cavan.
Geraldine O’Reilly and Paddy Stanley were killed instantly in the blast on Belturbet’s Main Street on December 28, 1972.
Justice for the Forgotten claims serious questions remain unanswered about the investigation into the car bombing.
Spokeswoman Margaret Urwin said the Government must establish a commission to look at the garda investigation into the blast, and a number of other bombings in the early 1970s.
“The Commission of Investigation has been recommended by a joint Oireachtas committee.
“We need to know the truth at last,” she said.
The father of Paddy Stanley, Joe, appealed to Justice Michael McDowell to set up an inquiry aimed at identifying the bombers who killed his son.
“I want the minister for Justice to get up and get the bombers.
“The bombers are known in Cavan. Everyone seems to know their names but the gardaí don’t want to know,” he said.
Mr Stanley accused local gardaí of “falling asleep” during the original investigation into the murder of his son who died as he used a public pay phone to call his mother to say his would not be home that night due to engine trouble.
Ms O’Reilly died as she went to buy chips at a shop near the car bomb.
No one was ever charged, despite the fact that many names of known loyalist terrorists were provided to gardaí.
