Teen faces court after friend fatally stabbed
The families of both men were said to be traumatised yesterday.
The victim, Alan Young, also aged 19, received a knife wound during a row with his friend.
The incident took place on Bremen Road in Irishtown, in south Dublin, at around 1.20am on Sunday.
Mr Young, from George Reynolds House in Irishtown, was pronounced dead on arrival at St Vincent’s Hospital.
His friend, from Sandymount, was arrested a short time later.
He was detained at Donnybrook Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, which allows for a detention period of 24 hours.
A Garda spokesperson confirmed last night that the youth would appear before Dublin District Court this morning on charges in connection with the stabbing.
Local Labour Party councillor Kevin Humphreys said the families, and the local community, were very upset by the tragedy.
“Both families are in shock. One has lost a son and the other has a son now facing very serious charges. Both families are well known and are well respected in the area. It’s very difficult for both of them.”
He said the two youths were friends and had known each other for a number of years.
“I was walking around the area speaking to neighbours and I took a number of phone calls also. People are very shocked. It’s not something that was expected,” Cllr Humphreys said.
Gardaí sealed off a number of crime scenes for forensic examination, including an area at the front of Ray’s newsagent, a local shop, where the incident happened and a nearby lane, where Mr Young collapsed.
Meanwhile, gardaí in Co Louth and Galway were yesterday investigating two separate shooting incidents.
Just before 10pm on Saturday, a gunman entered The Emerald pub on Church Street in Dundalk and fired a number of shots at a customer.
The victim, aged 27, received injuries to his hand and back.
A man in his 30s and a woman in her 40s have been arrested under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
In Galway on Saturday night, the occupants of a house in Ballybane escaped uninjured when shots were fired through their downstairs window.
