Puppy love in struggle to save wee Ger

VOLUNTEERS are currently trying to save the life of one beautiful baby seal — left for dead by the winds that battered the west coast this winter.

Puppy love in struggle to save wee Ger

The female pup is named Ger, after the man who rescued her. She was discovered at the bottom of a cliff near Spanish Point, in Clare, on December 29.

She is currently recovering at the Irish Seal Sanctuary (ISS) where volunteers, including Pauline Beades, are drip-feeding her back to full health.

“It has been an unprecedented year so far,” said Ms Beades, “There have been so many rescues, but this one was probably the most dramatic.

“They had to climb down a cliff to get her and when she came in she was only weighing 15 kilos. She had no body fat left.

“She should be around 35 or 40 kilos, so 15 kilos is pretty much what she was when she was born.

“What we reckon is that she probably came from a lot further up the west coast, maybe Mayo or Donegal, and the storms just bashed her about as she came down.

“At the moment she is very ill but... we just have to try to build her up.”

Ger is one of 20 seals currently being nursed back to health at the ISS.
