Back to basics course for gardaí

COMMUNITY gardaí in the Limerick division will today complete its first back to basics course.

Four sergeants and 36 gardaí are assigned to community policing in the two Limerick city garda districts managed from Henry Street and Roxboro Road stations.

Henry Street, which takes in Mayorstone in the north of the city, has two sergeants and 24 community gardaí and Roxboro Road has two sergeants and 12 gardaí assigned to community policing on the south side.

The course has been specially devised by the community relations section at garda headquarters and will be rolled out in other divisions following its launch in Limerick this week.

Supt Frank O’Brien of Roxboro Road said: “This is about going back to basics and the deployment of increased numbers of gardaí on community police work.”

Supt O’Brien said that next February Limerick gardaí involved in community policing would take part in a course which would be given by members of international police forces who had developed community policing strategies.
