GARDAÍ were last night investigating the death of a 16-year-old girl in Co Kilkenny.

Senior officers were awaiting the results of a post mortem examination before deciding how to proceed with their inquiries.

The girl’s body was found at the family home, between Goresbridge and Gowran, some time before 10am yesterday.

The girl’s mother was also discovered at the scene and is believed to have had some injuries.

Gardaí and emergency services were alerted when the girl’s father made a 999 call.

The girl’s mother was brought to St Luke’s Hospital in Kilkenny where her injuries were treated.

The scene was sealed off pending the arrival of the Garda Technical Bureau, who began their examinations yesterday afternoon.

The girl’s body remained at the scene until the arrival of State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy.

Dr Cassidy conducted a preliminary post mortem at the house and carried out a full examination yesterday evening.

Gardaí were last night investigating all the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and keeping an open mind about the cause of death.

They were awaiting the results of the post mortem last night, which will help direct the nature of their investigation.
