Limerick dock could be retained despite land sale
Following strong criticism from the council over plans to sell off 44 acres at Limerick docks, SFPC have put the project on hold in order have further talks with the council and port users.
The port company was drawing up proposals to transfer shipping to Foynes.
The city council has appointed a sub-committee to hold further talks with the port company.
Cllr Ger Fahy, FG, said at yesterday’s meeting that 30 acres is needed to retain a working dock in Limerick and this would enable the port company to put 14 acres on the market.
This, he said, could be done in consultation with all stake holders and the proceeds could be used for the betterment of the city.
Cllr Pat Kennedy, a member of the councils’ docks sub-committee said they should seek agreement with the port company regarding the core asset at the docks and the retention of the facility as a vibrant docks.
