ALMOST 8,000 elderly people are facing financial hardship due to delays in processing pension applications, Fine Gael last night warned.

Lengthy backlogs at the Department of Social and Family Affairs have left 7,900 claimants waiting for a decision on payments.

Some 2,500 of those have already passed retirement age with the process system taking up to 14 weeks to complete.
