Stoppages due after box factory talks break down

LAST-MINUTE talks to avert a strike at a box-making factory in Cork have broken down, with SIPTU announcing a series of 24-hour stoppages to begin next Monday.

Stoppages due after box factory talks break down

Talks between SIPTU and management at the Smurfit-owned factory in Togher were held on Thursday in a bid to resolve a dispute over sick pay rates for the 140 workers at the factory.

SIPTU wanted management to increase the sick pay rates, which average e127 per week for each worker.

“There was no movement so we will be holding a 24-hour stoppage on Monday and for the next two following Mondays,” said SIPTU assistant branch organiser Bill Mulcahy.

“We will also be working to rule for the two weeks and this action has the full support of the staff.”

Mr Mulcahy blamed “managerial intransigence” and said the union was prepared to make significant compromises, including doubling employee donations to the company sick pay scheme.

“This factory is extremely profitable, with profits last year totalling €2 million, so we don’t think it is too much to expect a fair sick pay deal.”

The long-running dispute has already been heard at the labour courts.

Management at the company could not be contacted for comment yesterday.
