Weekend stab attacks leave three men with serious injuries

Gardaí in Mallow, Co Cork, said that they have a solid lead on the incident in the St Joseph’s Road area of the town early yesterday.

Gardaí in Dublin are also investigating an incident in which a 26-year-old man was stabbed in Crumlin yesterday morning.

The man, from England, was stabbed a number of times outside a house at 4.30am and was in a critical condition at St James’s Hospital last night.

In Cork city, gardaí are investigating the stabbing of a man only yards from Gurranabraher garda station just after midnight yesterday.

The 20-year-old was stabbed in the chest after a row broke out on the street in the Mount St Joseph’s Heights housing estate.

Gardaí were on patrol in the area at the time and were on the scene within seconds of the stab attack.

They found a young man lying on the ground with chest injuries.

He was rushed to Cork University Hospital (CUH) in a critical condition and underwent emergency surgery.

Doctors said that his condition had improved substantially by yesterday afternoon and he was no longer listed as critical.

Superintendent Tom Hayes said last night that garda investigations were ongoing and appealed for witnesses to contact gardaí on 021-4946200.

Meanwhile, the man who was attacked with a bottle in Mallow was interviewed by gardaí in CUH yesterday.

It is understood a row erupted between two men in the driveway of a house in Maple Wood at around 3am.

The man, who is in his early 20s and from Mallow, was slashed in the face with what appears to have been a broken bottle. He required dozens of stitches and will need extensive plastic surgery.

Witnesses can contact gardaí on 022-21105.
