Festival a chance to get close to nature

SUN-WORSHIPERS all along one of the south-east’s most popular coastlines are being urged to get off their beach towels and learn a bit more about the sea.

The annual World Oceans Festival opens in Tramore, Co Waterford today and runs until Sunday. The free events include surfing, canoeing, snorkelling and a chance to join in the attempt to break the world record for the most sandcastles built in an hour.

Those who fancy something less strenuous can also join in the celebration of our ocean heritage.

The Irish Wildlife Trust has again teamed up with T-Bay Surf and Wildlife Centre to present an event with something for everyone. Features include international kite-surfing, talks and demonstrations on bird box building and gardening with native plants, and the internationally-acclaimed Whale Roadshow.

Marie Power of the Irish Wildlife Trust says its going to be a fantastic weekend for all of the family.

“We have everything from beach sports and water sports to touch and rock pools for kids where they can see up close things like starfish and crabs and learn more about them.”

A full list of events is available at www.worldoceansfestival.com.
