A LIMERICK girl suffering from cystic fibrosis is living in a cramped flat with her mother despite pleas from doctors to the city council for more suitable accommodation.

Now Bridget Atkinson says she may be forced to go to the courts to force the council into action.

Her daughter, Lyndsey, 13, was recently allowed out of hospital for her Confirmation with classmates at Scoil Mháthair Dé.

But after the ceremony she went straight back to the Sunshine Ward in the Mid-Western Regional Hospital.

Doctors, social workers and physiotherapists have called for better accommodation for Lyndsey and her mother.

Consultant paediatrician Dr Michael Murphy contacted housing officials at City Hall telling them the Atkinsons were at breaking point and should be treated as a priority.

He said: “I am satisfied that there are strong medical reasons why this family should be considered for rehousing.

“I urge Limerick City Council to take Lyndsey Atkinson’s medical condition into consideration when making a decision on rehousing for this family.”

Physiotherapist Olivia McKenna said the council should take into account Lyndsey’s serious medical condition and treatment requirements.

Bridget Atkinson said: “My daughter needs all the help she can get, she has a life-threatening disease. At the moment she is on drips and antibiotics and needs the use of an oxygen mask to help her breathe. It is extremely tough for her.”

A spokesperson for Limerick City Council said they are aware of the case and were ‘interacting’ with Lyndsey’s medical team.
