Baby hoax calls woman recovering

The mother of seven is out of immediate danger after receiving treatment at Mullingar General Hospital in the past few days.

The woman was removed from the hospital’s intensive care unit over the weekend where she was admitted on Friday after being discovered unconscious in a car parked on the shores of nearby Lough Ennell, a few miles from her home in Mullingar.

The 33-year-old woman was described as being in a comfortable condition by the hospital last night.

It is believed she refused offers of medical care following her arrest on Thursday evening in relation to the series of hoax calls.

She was allowed to return home after being released into the care of her father early on Friday morning. However, she was reported missing a few hours later before being found by an off-duty officer at a car park located at Lough Ennell.

Large teams of gardaí conducted a major search of the Ballymun area over a 72-hour period last week following several emergency calls that a new-born baby had been abandoned in one of the high-rise flats.

Following an exhaustive operation in the area, gardaí concluded that the calls were not genuine. However, they eventually traced the calls to the Mullingar woman who has a history of psychiatric illness. It is understood that the woman also made a series of hoax calls to the emergency services in Donegal earlier this year.

A relative of the woman indicated she had been extremely traumatised in recent months by the deaths of her brother and sister by suicide.
