Gardaí have launched an investigation after the man was found with serious head injuries. The motive for the attack is unknown.

The man, who has yet to be identified, was on a life-support machine last night in Beaumont Hospital.

The assault is thought to have taken place in the Crumlin area in the early hours of Wednesday morning after he attended a party.

The man, believed to be in his early 20s, called to a house on Captains Road, Crumlin, at around 5am looking for help.

A garda spokesperson said: “He knocked on a hall door. His English was sparse but from what the occupants could gather he had been assaulted and was seeking assistance.”

He said the victim did not appear initially to have been seriously injured.

“He appeared okay at the time but his condition deteriorated during the day and he required surgery in the evening and is in critical condition on support.”

Gardaí are trying to establish who the man is, where he was assaulted and if anyone had seen anything suspicious.

“We don’t know how he got to Crumlin, who he is, where he was assaulted. We don’t know where the party was and we don’t have a crime scene,” said the spokesman.

Detectives believe the man doesn’t live in the area and that he probably got a lift sometime on Tuesday night to Crumlin. Gardaí have appealed for taxi and hackney drivers with information to contact them.

The spokesman said the victim had mentioned he had earlier attended a party and that the assault may have occurred after he left.

It is not known if he was followed from the party or if he was set upon by someone else.

Gardaí are making door-to-door enquiries, checking resident associations and their own records to see if there were any reports of parties in the area.

The Irish-Chinese Association, the Chinese Embassy and the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation were assisting Crumlin gardaí last night.
