Anger at second attack on wife’s grave

GARDAÍ are investigating the desecration of a woman’s grave for the second time in five months.

Anger at second attack on wife’s grave

The woman’s husband yesterday spoke of how upset he was following the latest attack on her grave in Mitchelstown, Co Cork.

“The person who is doing this is cowardly and evil. I wish they would stop and leave my wife rest in peace,” John O’Driscoll said.

Five months ago a porcelain picture of his wife, Bridget, was smashed off her headstone at Brigown cemetery and wreaths were also damaged.

After that incident Mr O’Driscoll got another porcelain picture of his wife erected on the headstone. However, he returned to Brigown cemetery a few days ago to find it was smashed, probably by a hammer. Wreaths had also been damaged again.

A distraught Mr O’Driscoll, who lives at The Glen in Cork City, yesterday returned to the cemetery and pointed out that no other graves had been damaged. Gardaí confirmed they had received no other reports of vandalism and that just one grave was being singled out.

Mr O’Driscoll keeps the grave spotlessly clean and has visited it on a very regular basis since his wife died three and a half years ago.

“This is very distressing for me and my family,” Mr O’Driscoll said. My wife died of cancer. For seven years she was in and out of hospital with it. She had three operations before she died. Whoever did this will have no luck for it,” he said.

“I’m grieving over my wife since she died on Christmas Day 2001. I just wonder how low people can get.”

Yesterday, accompanied by a relative, he went to Mitchelstown Garda station to make his second complaint.

Sergeant Tony O’Sullivan confirmed gardaí were investigating the matter and were continuing to work on the initial complaint made by Mr O’Driscoll a few months ago.

“We are treating this matter very seriously and I can understand how upsetting it is for Mr O’Driscoll and his family,” Sergeant O’Sullivan said.

He added that anybody who may have noticed any suspicious activity in the cemetery should contact Mitchelstown gardaí at (025) 84833.
